Scientific name: Odocoileus virginianus
The best known wildlife in Ohio is the white-tailed deer. This big game is stealthy, beautiful and hazardous. Deer is active all day long but significantly more active just before sunrise and and just before sunset. Drivers had to be extra careful during these times to avoid hitting a deer. Due to its large olfactory bulb (supposedly four times that of a human), deer can easily detect a person's presence. This presents a challenge for hunters. The Wildlife Division of the Ohio Department of Natural Sources has a quick primer on how deer herd is managed in the state.
